Rotary District 5840
District Governor Nominee 2010-2011
Stephanie A. Macchia
Stephanie is a product of the Rotary International Foundation’s Group Study Exchange (GSE) program. She began her journey with Rotary in 1992 when she was selected as a team member representing District 5840 for the exchange with District 3460 in Taiwan.
Upon her return from Taiwan, she was asked to join the Alamo Heights Rotary Club which had sponsored her for the GSE team. As a club member she has served on the Board of Directors and as vice president, chaired a number of different committees, and was elected president for the year 1999-2000. In 1999, she was the manager of Alamo Heights Night, LLC which runs the club’s major fundraiser and nets approximately $100,000.00 each year. Stephanie was also instrumental in setting up two (2) new clubs in San Antonio, the Stone Oak Rotary Club (2002) and the San Antonio Rotary Club at the Dominion (2003).
As a stalwart believer in the Group Study Exchange program, she served the District as a member or chair of the GSE Committee every year from 1993 until 2006, and has been called on to speak at numerous district functions because of this work. She has also served at the District level as a member of the Rotary Foundation Committee, Greeting Committee for 2001 International Convention; co-chair for the Ambassadorial Scholarship and Group Study Alumni Committees; International Lane chair and chair of the District Assembly for 2000. She first served as an assistant district governor 2000-2001, and was asked to return in 2006 and will serve in that capacity until 2009. In addition, she is a member of the Rotary International Vocation Law Fellowship.
Stephanie is a native of San Antonio, Texas, and attended Oliver Wendell Holmes High School, the University of Texas at San Antonio and St. Mary’s University School of Law. In 1989 Stephanie was licensed to practice law by the State Bar of Texas. Upon licensure, she opened her own law practice as the Law Offices of Stephanie Macchia. In 1997, she joined the law firm of ELMS ♦ HARMON, LLC as a transactional attorney and in 2002 she became a partner. At that time, the firm’s name changed and has remained ELMS ♦ HARMON ♦ MACCHIA, LLC. Stephanie handles all the real estate, contracts, banking, business formations, wills and probate for the firm’s clients.
Stephanie also participates in other civic and community organizations, including the Bexar County Women’s Bar Association Wills Clinic, San Antonio Bar Association Civil Justice Clinic, UTSA Alumni Association, and as a board member of the San Antonio Metropolitan Ballet. Her other volunteer activities include participating in the Elf Louise program, which sources and delivers Christmas presents for Bexar County's less fortunate children, and Cornyation, an official Fiesta® San Antonio event which raises funds for charities by spoofing Fiesta, politicians and others. While attending undergraduate school Stephanie played upright bass fiddle with the national champion bluegrass band Tennessee Valley Authority and remains involved in the local music scene in San Antonio.
Stephanie feels that the GSE experience truly changed her life and has become an integral part of who she is. She loves to share her Rotary experience with anyone she meets. Affectionately nicknamed “Gearhead,” Stephanie will serve District 5840 as District Governor for 2010-2011.
